The Upper Ohio Valley Diabetes Coalition will be hosting a free workshop, “The Diabetes Self-Management Program” for persons with diabetes and their caregivers. The workshop begins Tuesday November 17th and continues for 6 weeks. It will be held at the Mary H Weir Library located on Main Street in Weirton from 10 to 11:45 am. During the program the participants will learn and discuss their role in the care and management of diabetes, use self-help tools to balance and manage their diabetes, and identify common problems among people with diabetes. “By defining healthy eating and exercise, participants in the end will take charge of life and feel better,” states Cindy Webster, RN, instructor of the workshop. You may register at the Library or by calling the Hancock County Health Department at 304-563-3343.

Hunger Awareness

In conjunction with the Bread Basket's Hunger Awareness Program and our live online visit with Lois Brandt, the author of Maddi's Fridge, the library is collecting food for fines until November 14th. For each canned or boxed nonperishable food item brought in, the library will take $2 off of a fine on returned items.

If you are giving to a food pantry this year, please consider the following much needed items: Boxed Mac and Cheese or Potatoes, Canned Tuna or Chicken, Canned Soup, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Canned Vegetables, Rice, Dried Beans, Pasta, Spaghetti Sauce and Cereal. Please make sure the food is not outdated.

The Library Staff joined with Weirton City Employees to donate food for Make a Difference Day. The food was sent to a local food pantry.

Regent Nancy Valles of the Fort Steuben Chapter of the DAR, along with her daughter Vickie Joseph, recently presented Library Director Richard Rekowski with a donation of America's Women in the Revolutionary Era 1760-1790: A History Through Bibliography, a three volume reference set.

Recently,  we were thrilled to be gifted with a magnifier to enlarge print for those with low vision. This is an older model designed for the visually impaired with a lighted black and white screen. The display switches from positive to negative and varies the magnification. This equipment makes it much easier to read fine print on documents or magnify anything that needs to be made larger to be seen clearly. It will be a great benefit to all of us whose vision isn't what it used to be.
